Removal of 500m2 of asbestos cement debris within a sensitive building in Dubai

Project overview

Horizon International was contracted by Barton Engineering to provide non licensed asbestos removal works within a sensitive building in Dubai.  We supplied an experienced overseas removal team to complete the project, this comprised of Senior Contracts Manger, Site Manager, Supervisor and a team of four Removal Operatives.  All the team were security cleared to undertake security sensitive works of this nature, and each had the required industry recognised training to undertake their roles.

Overseas hazardous waste facilities can be difficult to source but, with our extensive experience, we identified and engaged with a suitable hazardous waste handling organisation that assisted us in the disposal in an efficient, economic and compliant manner.

Project requirements

During these works, our site team conducted removal works on 500m2 of asbestos cement debris from the first floor loft space under fully controlled conditions.  The highly skilled team safely segregated the building to enable staff to continue day to day operations. This was achieved by forward planning including phase plans, a flexible approach to undertaking our works, and daily site briefings between Horizon and post management.

Challenges on site

All overseas projects present their own unique set of challenges and obstacles to overcome in order to deliver to the highest standard possible.  This includes, in particular, logistics of transportation of specialist equipment via air or sea freight.  Due to the urgent need of the removal works on this occasion, air freight was the optimal option to achieving the desired start date.  Utilising our established relationship with our chosen international freight company, all resources were delivered prior to works commencing and collected from site as programmed.

Overseas hazardous waste facilities can be difficult to source but, with our extensive experience, we identified and engaged with a suitable hazardous waste handling organisation that assisted us in the disposal in an efficient, economic and compliant manner.  On this project, heat affecting working conditions posed a challenge.  To reduce the effects of heat on the work force, works were phased to be conducted at night to take advantage of the drop in temperature, locally sourced air conditioning units were also provided.

Communication can be difficult with overseas projects.  The project was started with the Senior Contracts Manager and his site management team.  Having this initial site presence ensured the removal team hit the ground running and capturing the initial key project milestones as per programme.  Once the site team was fully established, daily contact with the Horizon management team took form in daily video call sessions, emails and telephone conversations.

Project outcome

With the Horizon works complete, this allowed the posts refurbishment program to continue safely. The project was delivered successfully, within programme and budget.  We received praise from post management for our attitude to the project, the delivery and outcome.
