Licensed and non-licensed asbestos removal from a sensitive building in one of South Africa’s three capital cities

Project overview

Horizon International was contracted by a confidential client to provide licensed and non-licensed asbestos removal works within a sensitive building in Pretoria, one of South Africa’s three capital cities.

We supplied an experienced overseas asbestos removal team to complete the project.  This comprised of a Senior Contracts Manger, Site Manager and Supervisor as well as a team of four Removal Operatives.  All the team were security cleared to undertake security sensitive works of this nature, and had the required industry recognised training to undertake their roles.

The highly skilled team safely segregated the building to enable post staff to continue day to day operations. This was achieved by way of forward planning, phase plans, a flexible approach to undertaking our works and daily site briefings between Horizon and post management.

Project requirements

During these works, our site team conducted removal works on a number of different asbestos containing materials; asbestos insulating board and associated debris above plasterboard ceilings under fully controlled conditions, encapsulation of asbestos insulation board panels, removal of vinyl flooring with asbestos containing backing paper, asbestos cement panels and flues.  The highly skilled team safely segregated the building to enable post staff to continue day to day operations. This was achieved by way forward planning, phase plans, a flexible approach to undertaking our works and daily site briefings between Horizon and post management.

Challenges on site

All overseas projects present their own unique set of challenges and obstacles to overcome in order to deliver projects to the highest standard possible, in particular logistics of transportation of specialist equipment via air or sea freight.  Due to the urgent need of the required removal works on this occasion air freight was the optimal option to achieving the desired start date. Using our established relationship with a chosen international freight company, all resources were delivered prior to works commencing and collected from site as programmed.

Overseas hazardous waste facilities can be difficult to source.  We identified and engaged with a suitable hazardous waste handling organisation that assisted us in the disposal generated from site in an efficient, economic and compliant manner.

Communication can also be difficult with overseas projects.  The project was started with the Senior Contracts Manager and his site management team.  Having this initial site presence ensured the removal team hit the ground running and captured the initial key project milestones as per programme.

Project outcome

With the Horizon works complete this allowed the posts refurbishment program to continue safely. The project was delivered successfully, within programme and budget. We received praise from post management for our attitude to the project, the delivery and outcome
